The Museo Subacuatico de Arte — also known as the Cancun Underwater Museum — opened in 2010 when artist Jason deCaires Taylor sunk hundreds of life-sized human figures in the water. The statues are displayed without plaques or explanations, and are designed to facilitate coral growth. The artist hopes that the underwater museum will draw people away from the nearby natural reefs, which are suffering under the strain of approximately 750,000 people that visit them every year.
